A Lesson Learned with my Delta SkyMiles Status

As you know, my primary goal with my method is to achieve the best status I can with the Delta SkyMiles program.  I use the American Express Delta Reserve card to do this.  Each year, it’s the first card out of my wallet whether I’m doing a business expense, or a personal one.  Throughout the year, I will log into the website (as you can’t do this over the mobile app) and check my spending for year to date to check on my progress. At $30,000 spent, I get 15,000 MQMs, and then another 15,000 MQMs at $60,000.

This year as I rolled into September, I figured I would reach my goal by the end of the month, when the bill posts, and I’d have my MQM “bump”.

I wanted this bump as it would jump my status from Gold to Platinum.  This would mean my upcoming business trip to Vegas would be upgraded to Comfort+.  Not to mention my wife and I’s trip to San Francisco the next month.  Our trip to Orlando in January, and so on and so on.

October 1st came and went, and no bonus.  I checked my progress, and I was $1300 shy.  Uh oh! I started my end of year sign up bonus run a little too soon.  Oh well, $1300 will be easy to do, and it was.

Now here we are starting November, and still no bump.  I check my spending to date and the report is showing me that I’ve met my requirement.  So I open up the chat window with customer service.  Within a couple of minutes they were able to tell me that I was, in fact, $130 shy of my goal. UGH!

So now, I will make that bump this month.  No chance of missing it now. But my trip to Vegas has come and gone, and the upgrade for our upcoming trip to the bay will have to be purchased or left to chance.
